You will wonder at times how she knew about you and a particular significant other because she seems to describe you and the relationship to a T. And, when you read the last page you will wish you had read it years and a number of relationships earlier.

I have read other books on this topic which spoke to me... This book, which I got in the Kindle version, pulled it all together for me--the biology, personal values, self identity, the human quest for belonging and intimacy. The book... brought to me great understanding. I wish I had ordered the paper version with the workbook. I ended up going back and ordering it.

A Good Relationship is not a Destination…

A good relationship is not a destination; a good relationship is a process.

We all want to “get there.” We want to put in the work and reap our rewards. We want someone to show us the way, give us the answers and somehow enable us to finally be happy.

Or so we think.

The truth is that a good relationship is process. It begins with becoming aware of who you are, understanding what makes your partner tick, and learning how to navigate the waters of being in relationship with each other. You never become an expert. You never totally get there. There is always more to learn. You will never be perfect at it.

I invite you to consider that you and your partner will stumble from time to time. I invite you to accept that a good relationship requires you to work at it. You can’t be complacent, lazy or take it for granted. You need to put your attention and efforts toward it. And you need to understand that even when you do this, you will never get that happy ending.

So what’s in it for you and yours?

When you commit to learning and living the process, you acquire a relationship muscle, a comfort level with understanding issues and breakdowns that occur within the relationship, and the confidence, know-how and courage to work through them with more ease and grace.

This is the destination. Learning the process, and then learning the process again and again.

The gift from doing so?

Personal power and freedom of choice. And a relationship based on mutual respect, love and intimacy. Go for it!

Be well,

Julie

Quote for the Week!

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.   -An African proverb

It's not a matter of either/or. It's a matter of both/and. We must make the choice of going fast or far every day. Next time you need to choose, choose wisely.

Be well and safe travels,

Julie

Change is in the Air! What you need to do to make it work.

What changes have been happening in your life? Are you starting a new job or business venture? Have you moved? Starting to date someone new? Starting over all together?  Life changes are both exciting and challenging at the same time. They require letting go of the old, defining the new, and dealing with the unknown as you say goodbye to the past and get comfortable with your new future.

Changes and times of transition offer us tremendous opportunities to expand and grow. We discover things that empower us and things that humble us.

If you are dealing with a challenging change, get the support you deserve. Big changes require a team approach. Decide who you want on your change team and how they will support you in successfully navigating the transition. Some examples of team members include friends, mentors, advisors, coaches, counselors, family members and specific people who have specific skill-sets and professional know-how. Whoever you decide to include on your team, make sure you build your team. Don't go at alone. If you don't, you will be more stressed and less likely to succeed.

Having the right people in the right place at the right time ensures your success and well-being.

Life is full of change and my life is no exception. It seems like just when I've settled in from one change, I'm off to the next. My latest news?

I'm pleased to announce that I've moved to a new and beautiful office in Hermosa Beach. But before you start wondering where it is, you won't have to look far. Our new office is just across the hall from the old office--we're now at 2615 Pacific Coast Highway, Suite 327 Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.

The good news is that the new offices enable me to accommodate more psychotherapy and coaching clients. So if you've been putting off taking the time to take care of yourself, your relationship and your life--this is the time to take action. Give me a call at 310-379-5855310-379-5855  and start creating the life you choose. I work with individuals, couples and and families. And whether you are feeling anxious, depressed, frustrated or resigned, there really is a way to shift the way you live your life and relate to others that results in more fulfillment and satisfaction.

Not in the Los Angeles area? No problem. I work via phone or Skype for those that are not able to come to the office. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how effective a virtual session can be. I've been doing this work for over 25 years and some of the most powerful and impactful sessions I've had with clients have been conducted by phone.

As always, I'm here to support you in creating strong and intimate relationships in every area of your life!

Be well,

Julie

Are you up for an experiment? I challenge you to live like Charles Schultz!

Charles Schultz was a lucky man. Read why.

"My life has no purpose, no direction, no aim, no meaning, and yet I’m happy. I can’t figure it out. What am I doing right?" – Charles Schultz

I think the reason why Charles Schultz lived his life as a happy man was because he purposely avoided over thinking--the meaning of life--his life. We spend a lot of time thinking--thinking about what happened in the past, what it meant, what is happening to us right now, how can we overcome it, what will happen in the future and how we can control it.

I know we all have a frontal cortex that is designed to do just that. But really, don't you think we over think things a bit too much? Maybe our frontal cortex is responsible for our unhappiness? Maybe we'd all be better off if we just didn't try to be so smart and so clever in figuring things out. Just possibly Charles got it right. No meaning, no purpose. Just life.

I say let's give it a try. For one week, stop living your life in pursuit of anything. Don't over think it. Just live.

Let me know how it goes!

Be well,

Julie

My Favorite Quote for the Week

"A happy childhood is the worst possible preparation for life" - Richard S. Friedman

I love this quote. Not only is it true, it reflects the true meaning of life. So many people dream of a day when they win the lottery, fall in love, or retire to that perfect fantasy life. The fantasy is that if we had it easy, if things were magically "handled" for us, if we had no worries, then we would find our ultimate happiness.  The truth is our life has meaning, texture and character all because we DON"T have it easy all the time, things are not magically handled for us and we have worries and struggles throughout our lives. It is in those moments when we are challenged that our lives become alive, evolve and transform before our very eyes.

No one said life was easy. It's not. But easy doesn't mean fulfilling and satisfying. So today, look back on your life and appreciate where you've been and how you've become the person you are today. I guarantee it was not because you had it easy. It was not because everything was handed to you on a silver platter. It was because you overcame struggles, learned your lessons the hard way and celebrated those sweet moments of triumph even more so because of it.

Here's to your life--a life well lived.  Now go take on the day!

Be well,
Julie
