You will wonder at times how she knew about you and a particular significant other because she seems to describe you and the relationship to a T. And, when you read the last page you will wish you had read it years and a number of relationships earlier.

I have read other books on this topic which spoke to me... This book, which I got in the Kindle version, pulled it all together for me--the biology, personal values, self identity, the human quest for belonging and intimacy. The book... brought to me great understanding. I wish I had ordered the paper version with the workbook. I ended up going back and ordering it.

The Number One Question I Get Asked by Singles

When I’m working with someone who is newly single or habitually single, inevitably he or she will ask me this question--

“Where do I meet quality people?”

Given how many dating sites one can find on the internet, I’m always baffled by this question. Finding someone to date is easy. Simply put up a well-written profile and a nice picture and you will find someone to date. In fact, you can find someone new to date every week. No problem.

Finding someone who is right for you may require a different approach. While the Internet and dating (or those “hook-up”) apps offer a multitude of people to choose from, they also invite a lot of deception, disappointment and may end up feeling like a numbers game. I’m also a bit old fashioned and I do believe there are benefits to meeting people the way we were meant to—in person, by chance—or not.

So here are my six suggestions on how to meet that someone who is right for you.

  1. Do what you love to do—just find a group, club or class to do it with. Get yourself in proximity to people with the same passions and interests as you. And being around them week after week provides the perfect environment for relationships to form.
  2. Try something new. Take up tap dancing, piano lessons, whatever. Get past your comfort zone and spend time with others who are learning the same thing. When you’re outside your comfort zone, you become more vulnerable, real and open.
  3. Volunteer for a cause you care about. You will most likely meet others with similar values. Helping others is also a natural anti-depressant and dopamine boost. Focus on something and someone other than your obsession with meeting someone new.
  4. Go to the dog park. Go whether you have a dog or not. There’s something about being at a dog park that makes everyone feel good. Create a ritual around being there at the same time each week. People form friendships easily in these kinds of settings and if you like dog people, this is a great place to meet human friends and furry friends alike.
  5. Go to a restaurant and eat dinner at the counter. Start a conversation with the people sitting next to you. A lot of people eat alone at restaurants. And most of them are hungry for conversation as well as a good meal. Take the lead. It’s as simple as saying, “Hello, my name is ____________.”
  6. And lastly, go through each day with a good attitude. Smile at strangers. Make a point to be kind to the cashier, share a joke with someone on the subway. Connect.

Let me know how it goes. While it may be scary at first, it won’t take long before your confidence and your social calendar begins to soar!
